4 month check in...

Well - we're still Paleo! So far, I'm down 27.7 lbs - and I haven't been exercising. I know, I know... I don't advocate this as a no-work gimmicky diet. That's not what I'm in it for. I've just had some other issues to deal with.

I am pleased that I'm steadily losing weight. No gain back. I fit into clothes I haven't worn in two years. Almost all of my jeans are loose, except for some that I purchased but couldn't fit into before. I'm working towards those. However, I did fit into a pair of jeans I'd purchased a year ago and couldn't get over my hips. And, they're LOOSE.

Bad news: My period has been acting funky again, and my Keratosis Pilaris has flared up. Looking at my diet to see where the gaps are. I still have headaches quite frequently.

Husband is down 40 some pounds. Truthfully, I lost track.

Time to get my ass in gear and start working out.

One month in...

Life is good! I had no idea where this would take me, two months ago when I stumbled on the Primal/Paleo lifestyle. Between March 16th, 2013 and April 18th, 2013 - I have dropped from 263.7 lbs. to 249.8 lbs. I've also lost a total of 8.125 inches from my body. The most drastic change being around my stomach/hips, losing 3.25 inches. Here are the numbers:

Neck:  .125"
L Bicept:    1.0"
R Bicept:    .75"
Waist:    1.5"
Hips/Stomach:  3.25"
Chest:     .5"
L Thigh:     .5"
R Thigh:     .5"
Total: 8.125"

After downloading some Google Doc templates for weight/measurement tracking, I realized that I should've also been measuring the chest under the bust as well as above. There were also calf measurements I could've done, but I've been blessed with shapely calves so I'm not so worried about that.

How do I like the Primal Lifestyle so far?: I really enjoy it. Rice and pasta were always just a filler because I had no idea what else to make with our protein. As much as I loved them both, I've done fine without them. Tried the cauliflower rice... Not my thing. I like cauliflower, but it wasn't quite appealing. Especially since Cauliflower smells a bit like farts.

What's tripped me up?: Bacon. lol. I love bacon, and it's so easy that I used it for a filler a little too much in the beginning. I've had to wean my husband off of consuming it so much, even though he's lost 26 lbs in the last month. Finding my lettuce. There's like 15 different kinds out there, and some days because my sense of smell and taste is so heightened (I'll get to the changes I've noticed in my body in a moment.) that I can't have especially flavorful lettuce. Ends up tasting too... Grassy. Dark chocolate. I learned my threshold because if I consume too much, it will literally stop the weight loss in its tracks. I've also had to watch my fruit intake. Fruit is good, in moderation. Repairing my gut flora - hello constipation. All of these things were minor, and weren't hard to tweak. I've gotten to know my body a lot better in the last month.

The Good Stuff: I now know how to pick avocados based upon how soon I want to use them, and I've learned how to ripen them. I am now the master of guacamole, lol. Roasted Brussels Sprouts with chopped bacon - holy moly - quite possibly the most delicious thing I've ever tasted. I've mastered roasted pork, and sniffed out the best deals on meat in the area. My skin is so much softer and healthier. Before, I felt like a lizard. I just chalked it up to my PCOS. Now, my skin is supple and smooth. The dark patches have significantly faded. I think I'm losing less hair from my head, but that may be wishful thinking. I have noticed a difference in how soft my hair is. It's no longer dry and brittle. My jeans that were too tight are loose now. I have more energy, and have started Yoga. Odors: Before giving up grain, wheat, processed sugars/food - I didn't smell that great. I needed to shower twice a day. My hair was oily before the day's end (even though I didn't do anything to get it that way). I was literally oozing the poisons that I'd put in my body. I sweat less, and when I do it isn't as pungent as before. I feel cleaner, in all the most important spots. My range of motion has improved, getting more flexible.

Stuff I'd like to see improve: I'd like to grow back some of the hair that's thinned on the crown of my head. I'd like to lose the facial hair, that'd be heavenly. Of course, my goal is to lose 100 lbs and I'm well on my way. I'd like to see my dark patches of skin disappear entirely. I'd like to have a regular monthly cycle. I need to broaden my horizons as far as vegetables, and meat preparation.

What I've learned so far: Cooking to temp removes the guesswork, digital meat thermometers are awesome. No matter what you try and supplement the sugar in your coffee with, it won't taste the same. Grass-fed organic beef is heavenly. I can instantly tell the difference now. If it isn't organic, it tastes a little sour. Likewise, I smell sour after I eat it. The dailyburn.com website is awesome, and I highly recommend it if you're too shy or embarrassed to get your arse in front of a class. Pork rinds... Helpful when you want something crunchy, just don't over indulge. Pretty much every "healthy" veggie chip is dripping in corn oil or some other potato starch. They're so good, we tried them twice. Both times, it took three days after eating them for me to start losing weight again. Coincidence? Maybe. I just cut them out entirely. If you can't go organic right away, don't stress. But, once you taste it - you'll never want to go back. Costco has decently priced organic ground beef. Ground beef is my go to, I don't know what to make, meal. Salt and pepper some patties, fry them up - wrap them in lettuce with fresh veggies - maybe some avocado, you're good to go. If you're like me, you'll stick to the basics that get you through until you can make some mental space for learning how to cook without all the stuff you're accustomed to. And, whatever you do - don't switch from non-stick pans to stainless when you start the lifestyle. You will burn everything, everything will stick, and you will want to commit random acts of violence because of it.

Paleo/Primal Cookbooks: For the most part... Completely useless. Save yourself some time - download Evernote and start using the Evernote Webclipper plug-in on your browser. There's no reason to spend $20 on a book of recipes you can't see until you get it and realize they're all too foofy and unrealistic. I think the single biggest thing you could do to sabotage yourself (aside from not getting rid of the crap in your house that's tempting) is to overwhelm yourself with new recipes and too much variety. You'll need to save money as best you can, and the way to do that is to buy certain meats in large quantities and cook around that. Which is why I'm not a fan of the cook book approach. Sure, try new things - but get your basics down. Lunch, for us, has been the biggest challenge.

What I use almost every day: Eggs. Lettuce. Garlic, salt and pepper. Olive oil, coconut oil.

Meats we buy: Costco has great pork sirloin tip roasts, around 3 lbs each - 6 in a pack. Tri-tip - it's a splurge. Our favorite is from Costco, but we like to take advantage of the sales at Safeway as well. Organic whole chickens. Drumsticks. Chicken breasts. Shrimp. Shrimp has turned into an easy and quick dinner or lunch. I currently buy them pre-cooked and tailless because I'm still finding my groove and I don't feel that experimental yet. You can get a big bag at Costco for $9, it usually yields two meals for two adults. They're good in lettuce wraps, over julienned squash/zucchini, as an add on if your steaks aren't that large. We love Isernio's chicken sausages. Especially the breakfast sausage in the tube, and the italian sausage. Until we find a farmer, and we know what goes into our pork sausage - we avoid the store bought because they all have sugars and bad stuff.

Well, it's 2 a.m. - I'll read over this tomorrow/later and finish. Until then! Grok on!

Perspective...

It has only been a few weeks, and my perspective has changed on many things. I just pulled myself from the swirling informational vortex that is youtube to write this. I stumbled across Ido Portal. Don't know who Ido Portal is? As of 15 minutes ago, neither did I. He's amazing. Come to find out, he follows a Paleo lifestyle.

I decided to find his channel on Youtube and subscribe. After two or three videos, I realized that as I looked at the people - I kept saying to myself, "She looks so healthy, so flexible. He looks healthy, strong."

I stopped looking at people as fat and skinny.

Let that sink in.

Healthy, fit, strong, flexible. Not one thought about weight, no comparisons, no feelings of guilt, depression - as I watched other people move.

I realize that I'm on a journey, and while my body feels like a prison now. It won't be that way forever. I want to be healthy, fit, strong and flexible. I don't care about being skinny anymore. I just want to move.

6.3 lbs in 4 days...

Just in case you missed that:

6.3 lbs in 4 days!

My starting weight was 253.7 on March 16th, 2013. Today, on the 20th - it is 257.4. Now, let me remind you that I GAINED 16 LBS ON NUTRISYSTEM.

I have read that people lose weight quickly without sugar, wheat, grains, etc. But, I never anticipated this because NOTHING HAS EVER WORKED FOR ME previously. I am eating bacon, red meat, and I am losing weight lol. I'm ecstatic. I'm still going through wheat/sugar withdrawals. If you don't know why, you obviously didn't take my recommendation seriously and check out Dr. Davis's blog. (do yourself a favor, and check it out.)

My husband was worse off as far as withdrawal than I was those first few days. But, guess what? He's also LOST 6 LBS

Here's what we've done:

Cleaned out our cupboards, pantry and refrigerator. No sugar. No grain. No wheat. No bread. No pasta. No dairy other than a little creamer in our coffee in the AM (1 cup).

Eating healthy organic grass-fed meats, veggies, oils, nuts, eggs.

Admittedly, all of our meat and produce isn't organic. We just haven't been able to find all the sources we need, yet. But, we've supplemented about 75% of our diet with it. We've been using coconut oil, almond oil, almond flour, coconut milk.

We have been struggling with lunch-type meals, but we're working on it. I'm tempted to buy cold cuts, but I haven't found anything that isn't filled with a bunch of processed chemicals etc.

So far, so good. Can't wait to see how I feel a month from now.

Primal/Paleo & Wheat Belly

I've been searching for years for something to help me lose weight. I'd lived my life by the food pyramid for the last 5 years; healthy whole grains, vegetables, low-fat replacements, healthy cuts of meat in moderation. According to the USDA, I should be lean - trim - and healthy. I'm not. I'm sick, fat, infertile and in pain. As a last ditch effort, I tried Nutrisystem. I gained 16 lbs. while on Nutrisystem. While exercising and eating properly. I sunk into a deep, dark hole of depression. Why me? Why can't I have a normal body? Why do I have to work so much harder than normal people to be... normal. I stopped the Nutrisystem. I was always hungry, felt bloated, my bowel movements were excruciating. The food was terrible, too.

A few months ago, I'd seen a friend on FB post something about a Primal diet. I dismissed it. Stupid fad diets, they don't work - I thought to myself. Fast forward a few months, and I'd hit my heaviest at 263.7 lbs. One lonely night, while my husband slumbered in the other room, I was up - unable to sleep. Again. I decided to google "PCOS Primal". Surprisingly, I got a LOT of hits. The first link I clicked on was www.primalgirl.com. I read her entire blog, shocked. She had completely turned her health around in 3 years, was the mother of two beautiful children, AND was slender and happy. Her writing style was so frank, her passion for the Primal way of living was palpable. I commented on a few threads, and she wrote me back. I dove head-first into researching the way of life.

After a few days, I was sold. After a few more communications with her, she suggested the book "Wheat Belly". I was blown away.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

I'm not fat because of PCOS. My PCOS wasn't passed down from my mother (who is a mother of three).

I'm fat because I've been eating wheat, grains, processed foods and sugar.

I was stunned. Red meat isn't the enemy. Butter isn't the enemy.

I read on, finding that there are nuances to the lifestyle. Primal vs. Paleo, dairy vs. no dairy.

I took a gamble. I figured that if what I was doing was making me fatter, there was a good chance that by doing the exact opposite might result in the exact opposite.

I discussed it with my husband. I showed him the pages and pages and pages of success stories from women who had PCOS and reversed the symptoms with the Primal Lifestyle.

I thought to myself, "You mean that I could lose weight? Stop having headaches? Grow my hair back? Possibly have children? Sign me up!"

At this point - I've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. So, we did.

I'm not going to regurgitate everything I've learned in the last few weeks, it's just too much. Instead, here are the links to the websites that fed my curiosity and contain the info you need.

The Primal Lifestyle: www.marksdailyapple.com and www.primalgirl.com

Wheat and its effects (evil, evil wheat lol.): www.wheatbellyblog.com

The Books: The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson, Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis, Rich Food - Poor Food by Mira Calton, Jayson Calton, with William Davis and Mark Sisson.

Recipe books: Don't bother. There is a wealth of information on the internet. There are Paleo/Primal/Wheat-Grain-Gluten/Sugar Free recipes by the thousands, for free, online. I recommend downloading Evernote, and clipping recipes as you go. (Evernote is AWESOME).

On my Way

The Problem - I'm 31 years old, and I have PCOS. Doctors haven't tried to do anything to help, but treat the symptoms - not the problems. On March 16th, 2013 - I weighed 263.7 lbs. I'm 5' 3" tall.

- I SUFFER From -

HirsutismThis condition produces excess hair growth on the face, chest, abdomen, thumbs, or toes.

Thinning hair: PCOS can cause androgenic alopecia--scalp hair loss--in a classic “male baldness” pattern.

Acne/oily skin: In women with PCOS, oil production is stimulated by overproduction of male hormones.

Skin abnormalities: Women with PCOS may notice dark patches of skin, called acanthosis nigricans, most commonly on the back of the neck, but also in skin creases under arms, breasts, and between thighs, occasionally on the hands, elbows, and knees. The darkened skin is usually velvety or rough to the touch. PCOS can also cause skin tags, tiny flaps of skin that usually cause no symptoms.

Polycystic ovaries: Classic PCOS ovaries have a “string of pearls” or “pearl necklace” appearance with many cysts (fluid-filled sacs).

Polycystic ovaries: Classic PCOS ovaries have a “string of pearls” or “pearl necklace” appearance with many cysts (fluid-filled sacs).

Obesity or weight gain: Commonly a woman with PCOS will have what is called an apple figure where excess weight is concentrated heavily in the abdomen, similar to the way men often gain weight, with comparatively narrower arms and legs.

Infertility or reduced fertility: Infertility is the inability to get pregnant within six to 12 months of unprotected intercourse, depending on age. Because women with PCOS do not ovulate regularly, it affects their ability to conceive.

Menstrual irregularities: Women with PCOS may experience infrequent or absent menstrual cycles. Infrequent cycles is defined as having 8 or fewer periods per year. Irregular bleeding may include lengthy bleeding episodes, scant or heavy periods, or frequent spotting.

Headaches: I suffer from headaches almost daily, and as many as a migraine a week.

Sleeplessness: I have a hard time falling asleep before 4 a.m.

Lack of energy.

Depression.

Allergies.
